The Trouble with…. Terrain

The MechWarrior Tactics team has resumed the series of primers they’d been doing (after quite the extended absence too).. today’s primer gives us an overview of terrain.. as it looks in MWT, and as it functions in both MWT and TableTop!  This also gives folks a couple of screenshots of the current (presumably) beta build’s appearance!

I’m not going to re-hash everything Viterbi has thrown into that post, as it’s a good read in it’s own right… just going to touch on some of the highlights.

At the simplest level, we have tooltips:

We've got tooltips..shiny tooltips!
We’ve got tooltips..shiny tooltips!

As you can see, this shot gives us both the cost (in Movement Points) as well as letting you know how occupying that hex will impact combat (in this case, anyone firing at a ‘Mech in this Heavy Woods hex, will suffer a 10% penalty on their to-hit roll.  So, use that terrain to your advantage (Keeping 1 light + 1 heavy woods, or 3 light woods between you and the target, will break line of sight, and make you untargetable).

Speaking of line of sight… this next picture Viterbi has given us, shows line of sight, and illustrated firing arcs for the selected ‘Mech:

Information galore!
Information galore!

We get a tooltip giving us the height information of one of the hills, and we can see that the Hunchback does not have line of sight, due to terrain, to the ‘Mech it’s targeting.

The red hexes, tell us that the target is in the front firing arc, so any weapon in the torsos, or arms can be fired (assuming the target is in range).  The blue hexes indicate the side arcs, and are only targetable by weapons in the arms (obviously, torso twisting would shift the firing arcs around).

As you can see, the gang at Roadhouse is doing what they can to make the map, it’s modifiers, and associated information, as useful and easy to understand as possible.  This will make it easier for new players to jump in and learn, while allowing us grizzled TableTop veterans to calculate our moves and count MP like we’re used to.

The game has become a lot more polished since last year when we first got a peek at it, by the time the gang rolls to Open Beta, it should be quite awesome!

MWT is still in closed beta, head over to the site, and sign up if you’re interested.. they’ve also been running their Founder’s program, which is another way to secure a beta invite.
