There goes $29 Million

3 days after crossing the $28 million mark, Star Citizen has surpassed $29 million funded.

Chris Roberts has posted his ‘yet another record broken’ announcement (I wonder if he gets tired of trying to find new ways to say “Holy crap, you guys have given us a lot of money!”).

$28 Million’s stretch goal was all about Squadron 42:

  • Enhanced Mission Design for Squadron 42 – The team at Foundry 42 has big plans for Squadron 42, and we’re going to provide extra funding to make it a true spiritual successor to Wing Commander! Squadron 42 can go above and beyond anything you’ve seen before. From opening with an epic battle instead of a training patrol to missions that seamlessly combine boarding and space combat, we aim to put you right into the action! Additional funding will let the team realize this, with enhanced mission design and more resources and animations to enhance fidelity.

To piggy back on the enhancements for SQ42.. today’s announcement also includes a ‘behind the scenes’ video about the Foundry 42 team.  This gives some nice insight into that studio, and provides a glimpse into their goals for SQ42.  It also shows that some people have known/worked with Chris for YEARS (some of the folks, besides his brother, have known him since they were all 4!).  Here’s the video embedded for convenience:

As expected, we also got the latest stretch goal revealed.  This one is tied into the survey that was part of the $28 Million announcement.  If we hit $31 Million (and, since it’s been less than a day since hitting $29 Million, and the counter is already about halfway to $30 Million…$31 is very likely by the live stream on Tuesday!), we’ll get a new mining ship (that ‘function’ won by getting 29% of the votes, the next closest ship was 21%, and everything under that was in the low teens, or single digits).

  • RSI Orion – Roberts Space Industries’ goal has always been to make the stars available to individual Citizens. Now, with the RSI Orion mining platform, RSI is letting individuals take over a process formerly controlled by megacorporations. The Orion’s features include high-grade turret-mounted tractor beam arrays, durable exterior-accessible ‘saddlebags’ for mineral storage and a cabin designed by the team that brought you the Aurora and Constellation!

Continuing the ‘you pick the goal’ theme from the $28 Million announcement, the $29 Million announcement has a poll for us to pick the next ship (go vote Smuggler!).  This will be the $32 Million ship, when we hit that mark.

This ‘end of LTI’/Anniversary sale has certainly caused an uptick in the funding numbers.. it’ll be interesting to see what the final amount raised just over the week sale (plus the live stream) will be.
