The other day Bryan Ekman teased us on twitter about upcoming changes to Night Vision mode in MWO.
Tonight, we got our official announcement/preview of it, along with an update to Thermal Vision.
Based on Matt Craig’s post, PGI has realized that a large percentage of players, only use Thermal mode, because it provided a huge advantage over normal/night mode. Â On the smaller maps (Forest Colony, River City) Thermal vision would let you identify enemy ‘Mechs, and then you could start shooting the blue blob with Guass/ER PPCs. Â The changes announced tonight (coming in the April 2nd patch) limit night vision and thermal vision to a range of 700 meters.. meaning, they might not always be the best choice anymore.
Here’s the new and improved night vision:
The somewhat painful glow/glare has been removed, and distance shortened up. Â You can see that the Jenner in the picture is clearly visible and doesn’t look distorted by the glare like the current night vision mode can do.
Here’s the new thermal mode:
Again, the Jenner is easy to make out, and unlike the current thermal vision on River City, you’re not seeing all the hot spots from fires burning (at least, not in this screenshot). Â The greyscale thermal vision is a return (of sorts) to Closed Beta, as thermal looked like this then (with some changes).
Matt’s post has some great information in it about why they’re making the changes, so head on over and give it a read.
